Abbott rings the school bell for Indigenous attendance rates

The Prime Minister’s visit to the Torres Strait Islands this week will provide an opportunity for the MP to discuss the falling rates of school attendance in Indigenous communities. The $47 million National School’s Attendance program was introduced by the Federal government 18 months ago. Controversially, it has only marginally increased attendance in the classroom. Critics of the scheme suggest a lack of consultation with communities and educators is to blame for the fluctuating attendance rates.
