Abbot Point expansion slammed by environmentalists
Federal Environment Minister, Greg Hunt, has approved the expansion of the coal port at Abbot Point in Queensland. The port will service ships exporting coal from the potential new Carmichael coal mine. Queensland’s Palaszczuk Government has welcomed the decision, saying the approval is another milestone towards realising the jobs and economic benefits that developing the Galilee Basin could bring to Queensland, while continuing to protect the Great Barrier Reef. Environment groups and the Greens aren’t convinced the strict conditions of the approval, including that dredge spoils be disposed of on land rather than being dumped in the World Heritage protected Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, will protect the reef.
