The suburb of Marrickville, in Sydney’s inner west, has long had a reputation as vibrant hub of multiculturalism. It’s a seat which has been a Labor stronghold since time immemorial, due to its large population of students and migrants. But that didn’t stop Victor Macri, of Marrickville’s Labor council, from recently tabling a proposal that could force local businesses to translate all shopfront signs into English. He argued that having shop signs only in foreign languages promoted segregation.
