Detention isn’t the hot topic that it used to be but people are still being detained when they enter the country seeking asylum. Yesterday the government announced a Joint Standing Committee on Migration will look into whether that is still necessary. Kevin Liston from the Australian Refugee Association says detention really isn’t necessary as for most people seeking asylum it’s in their interest to behave and not abscond.
