You might think you’re environmentally aware but last week the Australian Bureau of Statistics said that the Inner city and inner West have the lowest rates of recycling I all of Sydney. Each year, every Sydneysider contributes 300 kilos of waste to land-fill sites and over 30% of this is green waste from gardens and kitchens. At the same time, rural Australia could use this waste to help combat the critical problem of soil degradation. As communities here and around the world grapple for solutions to these problems, a small experiment in Queanbeyan, New South Wales, may have stuck some big answers. John Mason spoke to Queanbeyan City Council Waste Advisory Officer, Kate Gorman; Queanbeyan City Council Waste Foreman George Loshiago; and Regional Manager of Resource NSW, Gerry Gillespie.
