The weekend saw both major parties embrace the concept of uranium and nuclear energy, but with varying amounts of enthusiasm. In an attempt to trump any outcomes of the Labor National Conference, Prime Minister John Howard unveiled his plan for allowing nuclear-generated power plants to be built in Australia. Meanwhile, Labor Leader Kevin Rudd was victorious in convincing Labor party delegates to overturn the party’s 20-year ban on allowing an expansion of uranium mines beyond the current three in existence. And all the environmentalists could do was look on in dismay.
