A Year 7 teacher from the small community of Harvey in Western Australia, 150km from Perth, has formed an Indigenous focused project for students called Beyond the Rabbit Proof Fence. It is part of a 2006 Partnership, Acceptance, Learning and Sharing (or PALS) project that encourages young West Australian’s to discover and learn about the state’s Indigenous culture, history, heritage and people. Harvey Primary School teacher Lesley Chennell used Doris Pilkington’s novel “Follow The Rabbit Proof Fence” as a catalyst to help children understand the stolen generation, reconciliation and the local Indigenous community.
