Farmer suicides happen all over the developing and developed world – Sri Lanka, China, Britain and even Australia, to name a few countries. But the numbers of farmers committing suicide in India are staggering – over a quarter of a million farmers have taken their own lives since 1995 – and it’s only getting worse. Award-winning journalist Palagummi Sainath has written over 200 reports on the issue as Rural Affairs Editor of the English language newspaper, The Hindu.
