A dangerous Indigenous man- the gagging of Lex Wotton

The only person to be jailed in relation to the death in custody of Palm Island man Cameron Doomadgee has been granted parole. Lex Wotton was jailed for his involvement in the riots that erupted on Palm Island in 2004 after police released findings that Doomadgee’s death was accidental. Now an antiquated Queensland law has ensured that he can’t speak to the media. In order to meet his parole conditions he’s also not allowed to participate in any public meetings. Both restrictions have effectively silenced a man who has come to represent the injustices of the Palm Island Indigenous death in custody.
