Today marks the 40th anniversary of the drowning of Dr. George Duncan in Adelaide’s River Torrens. The death of the Adelaide University Law Professor became the impetus for the change in decriminalising homosexuality in South Australia.
On the banks of the River Torrens, on the spot where Dr. Duncan was thrown into the river there was a memorial service where the Minister for Communities and Social Inclusion, Ian Hunter spoke. Gay activist Ian Purcell said that Duncan’s death caused a complete legal turnaround in the attitude to homosexuals. The Wire also spoke to a student who was at Adelaide University at 1972 about the event.
