Last week the Chief Justice of the Family Court Alistair Nicholson allowed a 13 year old girl to take the first steps towards changing her sex. The landmark decision has prompted a big debate because of the girl’s young age. The court was told the girl named Alex was raised as a boy and feels trapped, confused and has thought about suicide. Psychiatrists have diagnosed her with Gender Identity Dysphoria. To find out more about this condition Amelia McFarlane spoke to Margaret Jones from Transwest, the Transgender Association of Western Australia. She asked her if she thinks changing sex will improve Alex’s life.
