While the public seems to have accepted the federal government’s tracing app, with over 3 million downloads so far, some experts say options that better preserved people’s privacy should have been considered.

Researchers at RMIT’s Blockchain Innovation Hub say an open collaboration with industry to test different ideas could have come up with a method of tracing contacts that records less identifying information.

Currently the way the app works is by recording contacts with other phones on which it is installed, saving the date, time and duration of each contact.
