A joint letter from Melbourne-based Human Rights Law Centre and international NGO, Human Rights Watch, is calling on Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd to send Australian embassy staff to monitor events in Western Papua on December 1.

This Thursday marks 50 years since West Papua’s Morning Star flag was first raised on December 1, 1961.Since the region came under Indonesian rule in 1969, the flag has been powerful symbol of the West Papuan independence movement, and flying it is illegal under Indonesian law.More than 130 West Papuans are currently jailed for taking part in flag flying demonstrations.
