In non-literate cultures, memory and understanding of the natural world were shared through storytelling and ritual. This was most often linked to the landscape and shared as nomadic people moved through the world.

As populations became settled, there was a need to find new ways to share the information embedded in the landscape, and author Lynne Kelly has identified some of the world’s historical sites that may hold the key to how that happened.
