Australia’s most research intensive universities say the way that funding is allocated is broken, and say that funding should only go to researchers that are world-class in research rankings. The Group of Eight, representing these universities says that millions of dollars of taxpayer money is being wasted on ‘mediocrity’. But other universities have hit back, saying that the rankings don’t adequately measure the value of their contribution to research.
