Blanket policy of Welfare Debit trial called into question

Welfare Debit Cards are being initiated as a system of financial control imposed on recipients of government welfare payments in the Kununurra and Wyndham areas of Western Australia.

The cards are loaded with 80 per cent of the individual’s income, with only 20 per cent available as cash.

The blanket imposition of welfare debit cards in the region was a decision of the Commonwealth Government, and is not supported by local service providers. But for those who see the day to day struggles of young people whose parents with alcohol and drug addictions there are some positive outcomes.
