Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders living in regional and rural communities around Australia are often limited in their access to road safety education and driving services. This, in turn, also contributes to the number of indigenous Australian incarcerated around the country due to traffic offences, as well as higher accidents and fatalities on the road, compared to the rest of the country.

While there are many barriers, various programs aimed at promoting learning and safe driving for indigenous Australians are starting to become available around the country, including the Indigenous Driver Licensing Program in far north Queensland.
