The Australian government is being urged to adopt an open approach to resource mining by publicly declaring the pay it receives from oil, gas and mining companies. By joining the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, or EITI, resource companies would also be required to disclose what they pay governments.
The Publish What You Pay Australia campaign is pushing the federal government to follow the lead of over 35 resource-rich developing countries already on board.The Federal government supports the scheme financially for other countries, but is yet to commit in a way that applies to Australia.
