Survey highlights musicians’ vulnerability to COVID recession

A landmark study of the working lives of Australian musicians shows the majority hold multiple positions and face precarious employment conditions.

Nearly half of musicians surveyed worked two or more jobs and over half of these musicians derived around 90 per cent of their income from non-music work.

Because of this, the researchers say Australian musicians are particularly at risk from the COVID-19 recession, especially because most are only able to do their creative work on a short-term basis, which has now been made extremely difficult with social distancing rules in place.
