Today, 20 Sri Lankan asylum seekers were sent home from Christmas Island with their claims rejected; bringing the total to 756 involuntary removals since August last year, and nearly a thousand overall. The Department of Immigration remains unsympathetic to those who pay people smugglers – but why are so many Sri Lankans journeying to Australia? And what process are they faced with when they get here?
