As the humanitarian situation continues to worsen in Sri Lanka, its government has rejected the Tamil Tiger’s offer of a cease-fire. The Sri Lankan government has labeled the cease fire “a joke” saying they are close to defeating the Tamil Tigers once and for all. The rejection came amidst claims that government forces were preparing for a large assault. That news came in an open letter received by the Australian Tamil community this morning from sources inside the conflict zone. The Tamil Tigers say the cease-fire offer is a response to international calls for an end to the humanitarian catastrophe that is affecting more than 140,000 civilians But aid groups, who have limited access to the region, say not enough international pressure has been placed on both sides to end the crisis.
