Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has announced that Australia will seek a seat on the UN Human Rights Council for the 2018-2020 term. Human Rights Commissioner Gillian Triggs says that Geneva may view Australia’s bid harshly in the light of its asylum detention policies, but that if it were to win a place on the council Australia would have to take a more unilateral approach to the issue
