In March 2015, Twitter launched its live-streaming video application ‘Periscope’. And in April this year Facebook launched its Live video streaming service.

Just three months later, Diamond Reynolds used Facebook video to live-stream the immediate aftermath of her boyfriend’s shooting by a Minnesota police officer.

In response to the video, Mark Zuckerberg posted a statement saying, “The images we’ve seen this week are graphic and heartbreaking, and they shine a light on the fear that millions of members of our community live with every day. While I hope we never have to see another video like Diamond’s, it reminds us why coming together to build a more open and connected world is so important — and how far we still have to go.”

But should we be going further? And will this really benefit us as a society?
