A government solution to overcrowding in emergency departments was installed in 2006 called Health Direct Australia. The $200m+ project was updated on July 2011 to include general practitioner support, to further aid those who need advice as the severity of their medical issue.

However the peak body for Emergency Medicine Doctors has labelled the initiative as a dismal failure. They have issue that the telephone triage system is not stemming the flow, and is wasting money in the process…
