A new Senate Inquiry is taking public submissions into ways of restoring an acceptable level of public interest journalism across Australia, and will report at the end of the year.

Major media organisations have in recent years struggled to stay relevant in a new landscape dominated by digital news and social media.

Cost cutting and job losses have also caused a collapse in news topics catering for the common good of people in all community groups.
