Russia is pulling out of its campaign of airstrikes in Syria on the fifth anniversary of the war. President Vladimir Putin says it’s “mission accomplished” after they assisted the Assad regime to recapture 10,000 square kilometres of territory and shore up the beleaguered government. But with peace talks underway in Geneva and Russia feeling the squeeze from international sanctions, is there another game at play?
