African immigrant Lovette Williams and South Australian aboriginal man Steve Goldsmith say laws are necessary to protect rights. Both have experienced racism and they say even if they’re not often used legal rights give people confidence to retaliate in sitautions where they are being subjected to racist abuse, and generally keep the ‘redneck’ element in society under some control.
