The NT government has announced its plan to transform the infamous Don Dale prison facility to a new youth detention center, but it will be located adjacent to an adult jail. In 2016, footage aired online of guards tear-gassing and physically abusing juveniles detained at the facility. Despite a full Royal Commission inquiry highlighting the dangers of having youth in contact with adult prisoners and massive backlash from the community, the federal government is giving the green light for this plan and has stayed silent on their reasons.
