Refugee advocates dreading end of Mexican standoff on offshore processing

The Government is still negotiating with the Coalition on an offshore processing policy for boat arrivals but they’re yet to reach a consensus. Refugee advocates are drawing positives from the stalemate which they say is preventing the excision of asylum seekers for now.

In a rare move the Prime Minister Julia Gillard met this afternoon with Opposition Leader Tony Abbott to try to shore up Coalition support for the Government’s proposed changes to the Migration Act. But little came from the 20-minute meeting with Ms Gillard presenting Mr Abbott with new amendments to the Act which he said he would take away to consider.
