When Labor senator Nova Peris stepped down last week, she asked people not to judge her reasons for doing so.

Peris has since revealed on social media the shocking racial abuse that she’s been subject to in her political career.

It is a stark reminder of the need for National Reconciliation Week, which aims to work on growing respectful relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians.

This year, Reconciliation Week for the first time coincides with a federal election campaign.
