Domestic violence is in the national spotlight, with New South Wales electing its first Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Canberra hosting a roundtable convention to tackle the issue today. In line with this discussion, the Canberra government’s proposed reforms to domestic violence laws in their state. A major component of the reforms would enable domestic violence victims to use the initial statements they make to police as evidence in court, instead of being asked to repeat their experiences. Experts hope this will protect them from unnecessary emotional trauma.
