These movements are driven by many causes – from fleeing danger to securing work – and can be difficult to track, even when they are done in the formal manner.

For those who are irregular migrants (those who don’t have the correct documentation, or stay beyond the limits of their approvals), the data is harder to find, and the stakes are high.
