Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched The Ayushman Bharat programme yesterday. A universal healthcare system being referred to as ‘Modicare’.

In a country that has some of the highest upfront healthcare costs in the world and widespread poverty, The scheme aims to provide health insurance to some of the poorest Indians.

Despite the good intentions of the policy, some are questioning its timing in the lead up to the Federal Election. And are also pointing to elements of poor planning.

So will the policy be successful?
