As NAIDOC events continue here in Australia, today America has its own celebrations going on. Today is Independence day in the US and on the 1st of July Canada celebrated its own national day.

Australia Day celebrations often stir up painful feelings for Indigenous Australians, many of whom rename it as Survival Day – so does the same thing happen in other nations?Michael Red Shirt identifies has both Native American and Native Canadian ancestry, and currently lives in Brisbane. He explains the Native American perception of Independence day, and talks about why Indigenous cultures around the world should connect.
