This morning in Melbourne the Families Australia Child Aware Approached Conference brought together a number of Indigenous Community Leaders to look at what needs to happen to put a stop to the removal of Indigenous children out of their homes around the country. Over 15,000 Indigenous children are living in out-of-home care facilities with the number being removed from their homes growing at an alarming rate. Removing Indigenous children from their homes and placing them in either out-of-home care services or non-Indigenous homes is detrimental to their cultural heritage with some calling it a ‘cultural genocide’.
