Human rights groups demand independent oversight of juvenile detention

Australians have been left shocked following the release of damning footage detailing the abuse of young offenders at the Don Dale Youth detention centre in the Northern Territory. The videos show young boys being strapped to a chair, hooded, gassed, and kept in isolation for extended periods of time. Human rights groups have called for Australia to sign the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture, or OPCAT.

The Wire caught up with human rights groups and legal experts, to discuss what steps need to be taken today for kids in detention.

25 years ago, there was a royal commission into indigenous deaths in custody: experts are concerned that a commission without real action and systemic change will not achieve its goals, and that these issues will still be here 25 years from now.
