The election is now out the way and the focus is back on the policies the Labor minority government has promised to deliver. And by far their most contentious policy is the proposed minerals resource rent tax. When Julia Gillard took over from Kevin Rudd her first step was to lower the proposed tax from 40 to 30 percent, and in a press conference this morning, Treasurer Wayne Swan has confirmed the ALP’s intention to pursue the tax. The Independents want the tax reviewed, and are under pressure from mining lobby groups to vote against it.
