Yesterday the High Court struck down an argument by Immigration Minister Scott Morrison that Australia should not accept refugees who could simply change careers to avoid persecution, ruling the Refugee Review Tribunal was bound to inquire into the reasonableness of this premise. However amendments to the Migration Act currently before the senate would deny applicants protection visas if there was any safe place at all in their countries, regardless of reasonableness, and even regardless of Australia’s obligations under international conventions.
