Government oversteps the mark on citizenship law

The Australian government introduced a citizenship amendment bill in Parliament today that will see dual nationals lose their citizenship if they ‘act inconsistently with their allegiance to Australia’. Critics say that the provisions of the Allegiance to Australia Bill are extreme by international standards and some sections lack clarity. The potential exists for people with dual nationality to be deprived of citizenship for relatively minor or poorly defined offences, eroding basic human rights.
