Labour Day is a celebration of the success of the social movement which led to the Eight Hour Day – a more humane attitude to workers rights after the Industrial Revolution led to excesses like  child labour and twenty hour working days. But is the gig economy, with all its promises of personal freedom and flexibility, eroding workers rights and taking us backwards?
