Last week Foreign Minister Julie Bishop flew to Fiji for a two-day visit to normalise relations that had been left damaged by the Fijian military coup in 2006. Even some of the regime’s strongest opponents, like the trade union movement who have been locked out of political life, still welcomed Minister Bishop’s re-engagement with the country’s military leader, but said she took a soft approach.
