Economists criticise bipartisan budget surplus obsession

Worsening economic conditions are making it more difficult for the government to get the budget back into surplus. But today Wayne Swan reaffirmed his promise to return the budget to surplus in 2012-13, saying that Australia had to demonstrate its economic credentials. Some economists are now suggesting that the economy may suffer if politicians are too focused on returning the budget to surplus in the face of a weakening global economic conditions.
