The written histories that are constantly used in academic works regarding indigenous Australia at the time of British colonisation are perpetuating the mores and knowledge of that era.

Words such as “savage” “primitive” are no longer used when describing aboriginal life and culture, yet the archival material in our museums still use these archaic notions.

Nathan Sentance is First Nations Cultural Programs Officer at the Australian Museum and a proud Wiradjuri man who aims to change all of that by de-colonising archives.
