The Queensland Land Court ruled this week that the Alpha Coal project should either be rejected completely or approved if it can meet extra conditions to protect groundwater. The proposed mine, located in the Galilee Basin in inland Queensland would be one of the largest new mines in Australia, and would involve extracting large volumes of groundwater.

A group of local landholder brought the case to court, raising objections that the cumulative groundwater impacts had not been adequately addressed. The courts recommendations are not binding, with the final decision now resting with the Queensland government.
