A failed concussion test on Sunday has left Australia’s star batsman Steve Smith unlikely to compete in the third Ashes Test at Lord’s, and many are now calling for more protective measures to be put in place to prevent brain injury during risky sports.

What’s more, the mandatory exclusion periods that are included in so many sporting guidelines can in some cases discourage athletes from reporting if they’ve experienced a head-knock.

So how can we make sure that athletes stay safe when they’re competing?
