As Australia’s involvement in Afghanistan moves from military to training and support based, anti-war activists still believe we shouldn’t be there. Fifteen members of the Christian Peace Convergence face court today charged with trespass on to Victoria’s Swan Island military base. Protesting Australia’s role in Afghanistan they blockaded the base entrance for a week then planted a fig and vine tree inside the compound to symbolise peace and justice. Even with the official withdrawal of Australian troops, activists argue that remaining SAS troops still shouldn’t play a part in the USA’s “dirty wars”.
