Our ideas about our relationship to the land are tied up in our cultural past.

For Aboriginal people, their relationship to country comes from long-standing cultural traditions, but it’s also influenced by western history.

This was what author and historian Bruce Pascoe realised when he wrote his book Dark Emu several years ago.

Far from the mere hunter gatherers as depicted in early Australian history books, Mr Pascoe discovered numerous historical accounts of sophisticated Aboriginal farming and food treatment.
