Canadian scheme takes prisoners back to their culture

Canada tends to be a bit of a role model to Australia when it comes to indigenous issues – yesterday at a meeting in Canberra the issue was how to stop indigenous prisoners getting out of gaol and then ending up back inside a short time later. The meeting heard from the Native Counselling Services of Alberta about a program they’ve introduced which is making a real difference. Mick Gooda from the Cooperative Research Centre for Aboriginal Health says the Canadian program works froma cultural base and he’s hoping to get similar programs working in Australian prisons.
