Social welfare groups have been pushing for an increase to the Newstart allowance for some time, and a few people from the business community have recently lent their voices to the crowd.

Even some on the conservative side of politics have said it’s not possible for people to live under Newstart’s thirty- five dollars a day. With over a million people seeking jobs and only two hundred thousand job vacancies, the demand is far greater than the number of jobs available.A survey from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that people on Newstart face the highest amount of financial stress in the community.
