Policy-makers have been threatening parents with punishment for failing to get their kids to school. Recently, a Queensland mother for not sending her daughter to school, and Indigeous Affairs Minister Nigel Scullion has recently announced a scheme to dock welfare payments in the APY lands. Experts are at odds with punitive measures such as these, and say there are more effective means of getting kids to school.

One such approach is known as restorative practice, and involves students actively being involved in decision making in the classroom.
